Hallmundarhraun, the biggest lava area in Borgarfjörður, was formed in an eruption around the year 900. It covers more than 240km2 and has most of Iceland’s longest and largest lava caves.

The farm Fljótstunga is located in Hallmundarhraun and in the land of Fljótstunga is the lava cave Víðgelmir. Viðgelmir is 1585m long, the highest point inside the cave is 15.8m and 16.5m in width.

Víðgelmir is by far the largest of all known lava caves in Iceland. It has beautiful ice formations that change constantly all year around and due to an unique formation in the lava, the ice can even close the cave completely. Deep inside there are many spaces with well preserved lava stalactites and stalagmites. Bones and jewels from the year 1000 have been found inside.

Víðgelmir lava cave is considered by specialists to be one of the most remarkable caves on earth and it was preserved in 1991. This preserved cave can only be entered with proper guidence. At Fljótstunga farm we offer special guided tours that take you through the gate that helps preserve the cave. In summer we organize tours on a regular basis. In winter we can arrange special tours upon previous request and with anticipation. At the same time the cave tour fee helps the cave's preservation and accesibility, the maintenance of the surrounding area and of the road to the cave which we try to keep in condition for all cars.
