the story
This cottage was originally located and
first built in a summerhouse area just
outside of Borgarnes. The former
farmer in Fljótstunga, Bjarni H.
Johansen, built this house for his
family and later brought it to Fljótstunga
farm. It was moved to the top of the hill
giving its large windows a whole new
purpose.
the name
The 'hey' part of Heygarður simply
means hay, as in grass that has been cut
and dried as food for farm animals. The
'garður' part means a kind of a fence or
a stack of rocks that used to be stacked up and around the hay so that the horses or the sheep could not get to it. It also means garden.
